Freshwater Place, Melbourne

Svelte, sleek, sophisticated, this building is very much an urban animal. Its slender, honed silhouette, as whippet-thin as a knife blade – 205 metres tall and a skinny 25.5 metres wide – meant it could shimmy in to one of the last remaining spaces on Melbourne’s fashionably redeveloped Southbank riverfront. Residents of its 540 apartments, enjoy enviable views over the city, River Yarra, parks and gardens, as far as the bay.

The smooth, smoky-brown charcoal and glass facades are understated yet luxurious; quietly commanding rather than attention-grabbing. Glass is a big feature of the building with floor-to-ceiling windows giving residents wrap-around views. In the 40th floor spa and gym, the glass wall creates the clever illusion that water from the ‘infinity’ swimming pool simply disappears over the edge and tumbles down the walls of the building.
