Particle Management Technology

Particle Management Technology is a patented technology developed in-house by AkzoNobel Powder Coatings scientists. Our patented Particle Management Technology delivers unique application process improvements to our customers with substantial applied cost and quality benefits.

By influencing the fundamental behavior of charged particles, it brings about improved control of the powder application process.

All powders are comprised of positive and negatively charged particles, derived from inter-particle frictional charging. The range of charges of both polarities form a bipolar charge distribution. Changing the bipolar charge distribution influences the way a powder coating will fluidise, transport along tubes, form a cloud when sprayed, and ultimately, how it will deposit on an earthed part.  Particle Management Technology is the collective term for a range of patented technologies in particle size manipulation and post additive control of these bipolar charge distributions to aid the handling and transport and to control the application and deposition of powders to improve the powder coating process.

There are three broad product classes within Particle Management Technology:

Interpon XTR

A fine grind powder capable of application at thin films down to 30 microns.  Without Particle Management Technology, such fine powders are difficult to fluidize, will surge and spit when pumped through tubes and the deposition is uneven across the part, leading to non-opaque areas where the metal shows through the coating.  The Interpon XTR product fluidizes and applies like a conventional powder coating, and can consistently achieve 30 micron film thicknesses across large relatively simple shaped parts.  It is typically used in Domestic Appliance end-uses where low applied costs are important.

Interpon AF

A half-way house between conventional powder coatings and Interpon XTR.  The particle size is somewhat reduced, but not to the extent that rigorous control of reuse of over-sprayed powder becomes necessary.  Film thicknesses are more akin to those obtained with conventional powder coatings, but the application of Particle Management Technology means that effects like “window framing” are substantially reduced.  This can allow lower applied costs and reduce colour variation across parts.  While Interpon AF is rather widely used to improve application performance, it is particularly recommended for ceiling tiles where even film build leads to even color in a large array of installed tiles.

Interpon AC

A powder coating designed to apply well to objects presenting the Faraday Cage problem.  Such objects have recessed areas that can be hard to coat, and forcing the powder into these areas results in extremely high film thicknesses in the easier-to-coat areas.  Interpon AC manipulates the product bipolar charge distribution to introduce particles that preferentially deposit in the recessed areas, leading to lower film build on the easy-to-coat areas while obtaining sufficient coating in the Faraday Cage areas.
